Luxury yachting is changing. Once a pastime reserved solely for the super-elite, there are now over 10,000 super yachts floating the world’s oceans, thousands of which are chartered out on a weekly basis to high-income earners. These new yacht charterers are wealthy, yes, but not fabulously so.
At the smaller end of the luxury yacht range, a yachting vacation is now just as affordable as renting a summer house in the Hamptons or a villa in St Barts. The yachting experience is at last entering the public consciousness as a high-end holiday option, which means the yachting industry has a rapidly expanding market base to offer new and exciting experiences to.
Meanwhile, the Millennial Generation are beginning to enter the yacht charter market with demands for ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experiences, while many of the more experienced yacht charters have now been chartering for a decade or more, and also want something new.
Like all industries, luxury yachting needs to evolve to survive. It must keep offering new and vibrant experiences to its customers to broaden its market base while retaining its existing customers.
It is time for yachting’s next evolution, or at least a new string for its bow.
There’s an exciting emerging trend towards new experiences on yachts, such as yacht charters that explore a theme. Yachts are extremely well-placed to offer itineraries that focus on narrative themes like art and architecture, food and wine, sport or history.
One can easily imagine an archaeology or myth-themed charter through the Greek Islands, a food and wine journey down the coast of Italy, or a ‘lost civilizations’ tour of Mexico’s Mayan and Aztec temples. On a themed yacht charter, guests can indulge in their passions- whether it’s birdwatching, music, shipwreck-diving or military history – before returning to their luxurious private yacht to relax and dine before getting underway to the next place of interest.
The yacht, of course, can act as an extension of the theme, with the private chef preparing themed meals served at beautiful table settings created by the interior crew. Some guests might like a themed charter along a more creative theme, such as the Prohibition Era, with endless potential for nights of poker games, jazz music and Great Gatsby outfits, while budding artists might prefer a charter where they learn to paint the beautiful places they visit.
Writing groups could find peace and inspiration anchored off the French Riviera, families could entertain the kids with a pirate-themed journey in the Caribbean, or Agatha Christie fans could have a week-long murder mystery tour. The options truly are endless for a themed yacht charter.
Yachting doesn’t have to be just about beautiful scenery, water sports and powder-soft beaches- although those things are very fine indeed. For those who crave something a little bit different, a yacht charter can be a journey of discovery and personal fulfilment, as much as one of sunshine and luxury.
Next week, in the first of our ‘Themed Journeys on a Superyacht’ series, Denison Yachts brings you some of the greatest yacht charter destinations around the world for lovers of Art and Architecture.
