Bermuda & Great Sound

Bermuda is composed of 181 islands, totaling 21 square miles, with just over 60,000 residents. Bermuda has long awaited its opportunity to play host to the America's Cup Match.

Its islands boast pink sand beaches, crystal clear water and wind 90% of the time in June. With exceptional racing conditions, Bermuda's Great Sound will play host as the race course, with the Royal Naval Dockyard being the site of the America's Cup Village.

Race History

The America's Cup has a long and rich history. First contested in 1851, the America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport and is yachting’s biggest prize.

The trophy’s roots date back to when a syndicate of businessmen from New York sailed the schooner America across the Atlantic Ocean to represent the United States at the World’s Fair in England. The schooner in fact won a race around the Isle of Wight, claiming victory.

After winning the trophy, the United States embarked on what would become the longest winning streak in the history of the sport, a 132-year stretch of dominance that saw boats representing the country successfully defend the trophy 24 times from 1870 through 1980. In 1983, Australia II became the first successful challenger to ever hoist the trophy.

The Boats

A state-of-the-art catamaran with a solid aeroplane wing-like sail and hydrofoils provides lift, speed and an unbelievable wow factor. These lightweight catamarans, which can reach speeds of up to 35 knots, are a smaller version of the AC72, which was used in the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco, California.

This year's newest AC Class version is a strict one-design AC45F, a wingsail catamaran with foils designed specifically for the America’s Cup World Series. Each boat is designed to the same set of rules, manned by six crew, and built from the same yard. The components on the boats such as the wingsail, crossbeams, spine, and the bowsprit are also manufacturer-controlled. This levels the playing field and makes for a competitive race.

The Teams

The fleet of competing catamarans are the defending champions ORACLE TEAM USA, followed by SoftBank Team Japan, Land Rover BAR, Emirates Team New Zealand, Groupama Team France, and Artemis Racing.

The Main Event

The 2017 America's Cup Match will take place between defending champion ORACLE TEAM USA and the team that qualifies to take them on as challenger. The qualifying team will have a chance to knock off ORACLE TEAM USA and end their two-time winning streak.

Other Race Series

Three other race series will grace the Bermudian waters during the 35th America's Cup.

The J Class Regatta brings together the classic yachts that competed for the Cup in the 1930s, with a minimum 6 of the only 8 in existence expected to attend and participate.

Some from the J Class will join other superyachts of 24 meter-length and up to battle it out for the America's Cup Superyacht Regatta Trophy, currently held by "Adela," winner of the inaugural 2013 Superyacht Regatta in San Francisco.

The Red Bull Youth America's Cup competition also presents some unique spectating, setting the stage for the world's most talented young sailors striving for the next step to the America's Cup itself.
