Pacific High is a one-of-a-kind, 63-foot center cockpit ketch designed by Allen Erickson and built by Stuart Yacht Builders in Stuart Florida. She was built for the only owner with great attention to detail and no limit on time or expense. Join us as we take a walkthrough of this custom-built sailing yacht:
I’m Randy Greenfield. Today I’m going to take you on a tour of the custom-built 63-foot cruising ketch Pacific High, located in Palm Beach, Florida. This is the conception of a very experienced man who owned a lot of boats. Almost two years in the building process, working with the designer, working with the shipyard, to build to a very custom boat. She’s really geared to travel and has done so. She’s been around the world three times.
Stepping onto the aft into the boat, she was designed with the idea of being very safe at sea and very dry. The aft deck is raised, which gives you more room in the aft cabin, which is nice. But she’s high off the water and very dry.
Let’s talk about the tender system on this boat because it’s very unique, in that there is a continuous line cord run through a winch mounted to the bottom of the mizzen boom. It has a car that will run back and forth taking the dinghy out of the chalks, moving it out to the end of the boom and rotating it out over the water. It’s all done with an electric winch. Your dinghy stays on deck, centered online, and is easily moved by the boom system whenever you want to put in the water.
Let’s talk about the shape of the hull in the design of the deck because it’s special and it was done very very well. It’s a solid cord hull as you can see; this is a cutout of one through hull in the boat. There is no cord; it’s all solid glass and roving map. We just finished completely grinding the hull down to bare fiberglass, putting epoxy or barriers on, and a brand-new body.
The whole rear end of the boat is up two steps. So you can transverse from the back deck, all the way to the foredeck and not walk down on the gunwhale. You’re walking on the cabin top and you’re two feet above that gunwhale.
The experienced sailor will really appreciate this boat because it’s designed for strength and simplicity. All the electric winches, all of your sales run roller furling, you never put a sail up or down on this boat.
The mizzen is self-contained in the mizzenmast, the main is self-contained in the mainmast, the staysail and Genoa are on roller furling systems.
All of the lines lead after the cockpit to electric winches. That aft deck walks one step down into a very deep cockpit with a retractable awning. So it’s very safe, it’s out of the sun and it’s deep. So when you’re in it in rough sea conditions, it’s very comfortable. The cockpit is surrounded by winches that are all electric. So you have high and low speed electric winches that are very strong, and everything on the boat is run from the cockpit.
All of your instruments are on the upper head enclosed. The computer, the GPS, the autopilot, the depth sounder; you navigate from the cockpit in this boat, not from the nav station. There are storage for any type of implement – hand bearing compasses, anything you would need to use in the process of planning your trip, is right in the cockpit.
Moving forward let’s talk about bow a little bit. The anchor system is a strong electric windlass, that will pull two different anchors, either chain or regular road. The seating up there for both as a lookout or comfort is very comfortable.
Let’s go down below now and look at the interior. The galley is off to your port. Lots of counter space, double stainless steel sinks, a four-burner gas stove and oven, across from which is an actual separate barbecue in the galley. Large refrigerator and separate freezer – lots of capacity.
Continuing aft through the galley on the port side, we enter the master stateroom. There are wardrobe closets on either side; it’s a walkaround queen bed with a custom hand-carved headboard, that is amazing. Ensuite there is a full-head with a tub, shower and a nickel sink, that is beautiful. A large custom-built dining table to the starboard side will seat six people comfortably.
After the dinette on the starboard side is the navigation station, containing a lot of instrumentation, so you can see every electrical system on the boat clearly.
Moving forward from the galley and dinette is the main salon. The port side is a settee. It also makes a comfortable single bunk. The starboard side is an L-shaped settee that pulls out into a double. Forward end of the bulkhead has a fireplace in it. Also a flat-screen TV, and your controls for the stereo system are here.
Moving forward in the VIP stateroom with an enclosed head, stand-up shower, electric toilet. Lots of storage in the actual cabin with good ventilation and good light.
That concludes our tour of Pacific High. If you have any questions about the boat, please contact me. She’s a very special vessel.
