Hi, Elisabeth Soltes for BoatTest.com and today we’re going to review the design and styling of the Carver C34. The C34 is a welcome new modern design from Carver Yachts. She has two private staterooms and several common areas, making her a perfect mid-sized cruiser.
It’s clear that Carver designed the bridge with two things in mind – cruising and relaxing. Every inch of space is accounted for and I could certainly feel that when sitting, lounging or sunning. There is well-padded U-shaped seating adjacent to the helm seat and all-seating is upholstered in high-performance vinyl from CMI Enterprises. Below the seat is abundant storage for gear.
The large aft sunpad is comfortable and with sturdy stainless steel railings provides a feeling of security. This C34 came with the optional oyster colored Sunbrella Bimini top, which protected the entire bridge. The molded-in fiberglass steps are wide with handrails to both sides making them easy to negotiate.
The 51-square foot aft deck is where the owner can customize a little bit. Back here one can choose to opt in for the upholstered seating and optional table or without the seating, leave it clean for cocktail parties or water sports activities. Either way the starboard side storage locker will come in handy.
The Infinity flooring in the aft deck and throughout the C34 is a seagrass color. The material is like thatched plastic with plenty of padding below. Carver chooses this fabric because it dries very quickly and is not slippery, even when wet.
The tinted double cabin doors truly open up this cockpit. They bring the outside in and the inside out. These aluminum frame doors are heavy and solid and well-executed making them simple to open and closed securely.
I appreciate the door lock. It is out of the way and easy to deploy, and you won’t stop your toe on it. It’s just two small steps down into the salon.
The U-shaped lounge is upholstered in a fabric by Spradling and the color is 65 pearl. The materials feel like linen – smooth and cool to the touch. I really like the motif Carver chose. The colors are neutral and inviting.
The bulkheads are finished with a textured satiny material and the two neutral colors add depth, helping to add the inviting feel of the space. The layout is open and flows well from the aft deck into the salon and galley area.
There’s an expansive window port and starboard, some of which open and Carver has supplied standard attracted honeycomb lines for privacy and protection from the sun. There is ample headroom in the salon and the soffit head in the overhead is a design touch usually only seen on large motor yachts. And it helps make the space seem even more open and airy.
The sleek wenge salon table can be raised or lowered and can convert to a berth. Like most common areas on the C34, the galley is part of the open-concept design. The solid surface countertops are manufactured by Affinity and the color is linen. The wood cabinets are made of wenge and really help to highlight the look of the dainty elegant handles.
I like how Carver made the galley wide enough for two people to work in at the same time. The small but deep sink and the trash receptacle are aft, followed by the two-burner cooktop and refrigerator, and lastly the microwave.
The deck in the galley is covered with Amtico, which is a high quality vinyl used in many fine yachts these days. It’s covered in an Infinity seagrass sectional runner with non-skid. Resilient white plush pile nylon carpet covers the rest of the cabin sole.
A large storage compartment is in the salon deck. It is finished with gelcoat and can fit several large storage containers. Most every bulkhead on the Carver C34 is upholstered in one fabric or another. The white fabric really accentuates the dark wenge of the trim and cabin doors.
The starboard side guest cabin has its own private door and full standing room at the entrance, which sets it apart from most 34 footers in class. Above is a frosted skylight to brighten the space with natural light.
There’s plenty of room for hanging and folded clothes in the closet, and it has a large mirror. Below is a cabinet for storing smaller items such as shoes. When both doors are closed, there’s plenty of room to make a wardrobe change.
The twin berths have comfort-foam mattresses and a filler cushion can be added to form a full-size bed. When sitting on the foot of the bed there is ample headroom.
The head is relatively large for a 34-foot boat. The inset white basin sink and the linen colored solid-surface countertop really make the dark wood pop. There are many shelves to keep items in the space and of course there’s also a medicine cabinet, which is wide and deep and perfectly framed by the wenge wood.
The C34 has a separate large shower stall with an aluminum and acrylic shower door. The shower head can be used as a hand shower, and there’s a bench seat and opening port light as well.
Because the C34 has nearly a plum bow, the designers were able to maximize the space below, particularly in the boat’s master stateroom. The high freeboard forward permits 6-foot 3-inches of headroom throughout the cabin.
There is storage above the dual port lights on either side as well as two hanging lockers. It is bright in the master, and this is due in part to the classic round opening port lights and the overhead hatch., but also from the 6 overhead recessed LED lights and 2 reading lights.
I think the design team did a wonderful job with pulling this room together with the wenge cabinetry and trim and contrasting vinyl treatment. Carver started with a clean slate when designing the new C-Series. This boat is modern, sleek and has well-appointed design features both inside and out.
So that’s our review of the design and styling of the Carver C34. For BoatTest.com, I’m Elisabeth Soltes.
