Going on a yacht charter vacation is unlike any other Caribbean vacation you’ll experience. A yacht charter lets you wake up in a different destination each morning, with a different view and endless activities at your fingertips.
When you’re traveling with a family, watersports are a key element in your vacation to keeping your kids happy, engaged and tuckered out as well as keeping you and your significant other relaxed. There’s no need to worry about, “Dad one more time!”
A professional captain can be the one driving the dinghy around and ensuring the kids are having a safe, amazing time. That way, mom and dad can keep reading that book, continue sipping on a handcrafted cocktail, or snooze away in the hammock.
Here are some of my favorite watersports activities available on your next crewed yacht charter:
Snorkeling gear is always provided on the yacht, making it one less thing you have to worry about traveling with. There are lots of great reefs to check out, including The Indians, Diamond Reef, Christmas Cove and so much more.
If you’re thinking about scuba diving, some yachts will include diving in the charter cost, some will charge you a per dive fee but have equipment onboard and some yachts only do rendezvous diving (go out with a dive company). The Virgin Islands is a fantastic spot for diving enthusiasts, with many famous wrecks throughout the islands and cays, so if you’re a newbie, it’s the perfect place to try it for the first time.
If your yacht is equipped for them, wakeboarding, knee-boarding and tubing can provide hours of fun for the whole family.
Paddleboards are a great way to get from your boat to the beach you’re anchored off of, as well as squeeze in some exercise while taking in the crystal-blue waters that surround you.
Kayaks are a great way to explore the islands at your own pace, as well as another alternative to taking the dinghy ashore.
Popular Virgin Islands surfing destinations include Josiah’s Bay on the east side of Tortola, Cane Garden Bay at the West End of Tortola and Hull Bay on the north side of St. Thomas.
Fishing gear is also often onboard and is a wonderful way to let the kids spend part of their day. The most commonly caught fish are mahi mahi, yellowfin tuna and snapper. Fishing licenses can cost extra, but your charter captain will be able to arrange it for your group.
Anegada is world renowned for its bone fishing. So for the fisherman in your group, it’s worth sailing up to Anegada to spend a day fishing.
While you’re in Anegada, charter guests should try kite boarding as it has some of the best kite boarding conditions in the world, with shallow, sandy waters and a great breeze year-round.
Some of the newest toys available on charter yachts are the sea scooter and the Seabob. They are a ton of fun as you’ll feel like a fish, powering you through the water.

Each charter yacht has a plethora of toys, so if there is something specific you’re looking to do, make sure you ask your charter broker.
