A career in the yachting industry offers the opportunity to travel the world extensively, discover some of the most remote regions in the world and share experiences with people from radically different horizons.
Starting at a deckhand position, for example, simply holding an STCW, will allow a first experience to work on the exterior of a yacht. As a relatively physical job, we see mostly men taking these positions. Yet the number of women working on the exterior of yachts is increasing. The main responsibilities of the deckhands are the cleanliness of the exterior areas, assisting the seniors with the engineering of the yacht and the general maintenance of the systems. Of course, the deckhand takes responsibilities in the lines handling and tender driving.
As mentioned earlier women tend to prefer interior positions, slightly less physical. The stewardess is the entry position on a yacht for the interior. They attend to the guests’ needs in terms of bartending, meals and interior polishing. They also take care of the cabins, beds, and heads, take care of the laundry and the detailing of the interior. It is common for smaller vessels to see the stewardess handling the lines when docking. As for a deckhand position a stewardess position requires an STCW.
Each of the positions usually comes with a salary between $2,200 to $2,500 a month, depending on the yacht, the cruising plan, the captain, and the owner. While the salary is an aspect of the crew life, if you are looking to travel and explore, this might be the right path for you. One thing is sure, being a superyacht crew is far from an average life.
