Hatteras GT63 Sportfish Crosses the Atlantic

The Hatteras GT63, POST ONE, took off in early July from St. George’s Harbor in Bermuda to Horta Marina in Faial, Azores – on a nine-day, 1800 nautical mile run across the Atlantic, an enormous feat that landed the innovative fishing tender in a class all her own. 

In fact, given the tradition of most tenders being towed behind their mothership, in this case the 147′ superyacht DOROTHEA III, POST ONE became one of the first sportfishing boats to complete such a journey, having managed the transatlantic pass on her own bottom.

Hatteras GT63 POST ONE

The trek began on the second week of July with Captain Josh Heater at the helm of the GT63. He was accompanied by his father and Master Unlimited Jay Heater, as well as Curt Vandervere and Tessa Setzer. As Captain Heater steered POST ONE for Horta, Azores, at a speed of roughly 10.5 knots, the first four days offered fairly uneventful weather, marked by clear skies with moderate to breezy conditions, due to the stalled system of subtropical storm Beryl.

At the day four check-in, POST ONE reported being underway for a total of 92 hours and had burned 1950 gallons of fuel, with Captain Heater noting that all systems were operational. The last five days of the crossing seemed much the same, weather wise, as the GT63 performed flawlessly through the flat, calm conditions on her approach to the Horta City Marina. 

Captain’s Log

John Crupi, Captain of DOROTHEA III, explained that the crew had plans in place in case they ran into any major problems, but the expedition overall was issue free. Captain Crupi also boasted that between June 19 and July 21, POST ONE had traveled 4,085 nautical miles on her own bottom from Panama to Azores, Portugal, while also fishing for six days in Bermuda, making it 27 days underway – in a 33-day time span – without a single point of concern.

Captain Heater couldn’t say enough of POST ONE’s performance, revealing, “team Hatteras isn’t a concept — it’s a reality. The attention to detail, advanced hull design, engineering, and fit and finish is what makes this boat and this brand a legend.”
