Marlin Mission: Passion for Fishing Leads to Giving Back

August 16, 2018 1:57 pm

M/Y DOROTHEA III and her crew are no strangers to charity.

The 147′ expedition yacht built by Cheoy Lee has spent a fair amount of her time on the water delivering supplies to hurricane-ravaged locales or providing clean-water filtration systems to islands in the South Pacific. Perhaps, that’s why Capt. John Crupi and his team set out on their latest fundraising campaign, with the idea of blending two longstanding passions: philanthropy and fishing.

Superyacht DOROTHEA III Marlin Mission

Dubbed the Marlin Mission, DOROTHEA III and her sportfishing sidekick, the Hatteras GT63 named POST ONE, are aiming to raise $15,000 for help distributing school supplies to rural communities in the Atlantic Islands of Cape Verde and remote areas of Brazil.

The crew were hoping supporters would pledge anywhere from $5 to $100 per blue marlin caught and released aboard POST ONE between early July and mid-January 2019. As fate would have it, the team had already raised $9,000 within just one week of launching its campaign, which only led to higher aspirations of possibly distributing a watermaker, along with those school supplies, to people in need.

The Finish Line

With an itinerary of world-class destinations mapped out for encountering the Atlantic’s best in blue marlin fishing, locations that include everywhere from Bermuda and the Azores to Portugal and the Canary Islands, as well as a goal of catching at least 30 of the legendary gamefish, DOROTHEA III, POST ONE and crew seem fit for the challenge, one that will turn their mission into a reality.
