127 Meter Sailing Yacht Reportedly Commissioned By Jeff Bezos [Revealed]

Marina Nazario | October 22, 2021

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Costs An Estimated $500 Million According To Reports.

In more Jeff Bezos news, the Amazon founder’s reportedly commissioned a 127-meter (417-foot) sailing yacht called Project Y721. The impressive vessel has left the Oceanco shed for the first time on October 20, according to Boat International. Superyacht photographer Tom Van Oossanen captured photo and video footage of the big reveal. Bezos’ new record-breaking yacht will make its official debut in 2022, according to BOAT Pro.

A black hull with classic exterior lines supports one of the longest yachts built in the Netherlands. Interior details of the project are still a secret, but the exterior will hold three masts and a bowsprit with plenty of deck space. Project Y721 is set to be the largest sailing yacht in the world. The current holder of that title is a 109-meter Krupp Germaniawerft delivered in 1931.

Bezos’ new yacht is estimated to be upwards of $500 million. A chunk of change from his $199 billion net worth. His new yacht ranks among the most expensive boats in the world. Topping the list is 531-foot ECLIPSE, currently valued at $1.2 billion and the third largest yacht in the world. It’s owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich.

It’s not uncommon for the ultra-high net worth, like Bezos, to own a yacht. But the caveat to this new construction project that made headlines in May 2021 is that because of the sailing masts, his yacht can’t support a helipad. So he also commissioned a second support yacht that can accommodate a helicopter landing.

If you’re in the yachting industry, you may know that motherships and their support vessels are not uncommon. But for some, news about his superyacht needing a smaller yacht was the butt of many jokes that made us laugh.

“The founder of Amazon is reportedly building a $500 million superyacht that is so big, it requires a support yacht to travel with it. This is like the billionaire version of having a second fridge in your garage.” – Jimmy Kimmel

“Truth is, Bezos didn’t really need the support yacht, but Amazon did one of these upsells where they go, ‘People who buy this, also buy this.’” – James Corden

“Today, we learned that Bezos will soon receive delivery of a $500 million megayacht. Don’t know exactly when it will be delivered, but we do know it will come in a much bigger box.” – Stephen Colbert

The Global Yacht Market Is Projected To Grow

The pandemic boosted luxury yacht sales. As international travel and events were canceled, people craved a safe way to escape. Yachting was (and is) the answer.

Following an incredible Q1, Q2, and Q3, 2021 is set to be one of the strongest years in yachting history. An April 2021 report from Grand View Research shows that the global yacht market — valued at $8.15 billion in 2020 — is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2% from 2021 to 2028.

As more people discover the upsides to life on the water, the yachting sector is bound to continue posting excellent results. Yacht brokers have adapted to the pandemic by initiating new sales techniques, such as using video tours and Facetime calls to assist buyers who cannot inspect their purchases in person, according to Boat International.
