Ron: Since I was a kid in grammar school, I have always loved boats, and when I saw that I could buy a boat kit, I thought, oh my gosh. So in seventh and eighth grade, we had wood shop. You could build a jewelry box for your mom or a coat rack for your dad and I went to the teacher and asked, could I build a boat? And he looked at me, well, what kind of boat? I said, one I can sit in and so this is Taft Boat Works. They’re the designer and it’s a boat kit. It’s an eight-foot boat that I had shipped from the Midwest to my dad’s grocery store because the school was right across the street from his store. So this was the plans and I built it at Coolidge Elementary School back in 1959, and I’ve had a boat whenever I can afford it ever since.

Jerry: Today I’m going to be showing you around Ron’s latest masterpiece, WELL DONE. Here’s what you need to know about this shot right out the gate. She’s 85 feet long. She has four stay rooms, six total heads, and an incredible sun deck. Not only am I going to introduce you to Ron, but you’ve got to meet his captain Wes. He’s been with Ron for over 20 years, since the very beginning.

84 Burger Flybridge

Wes: Hello, I’m Wes Heinmiller. I’m the skipper WELL DONE. Good part about dealing with Ron is he will opt to safety and he’ll opt to function and he’ll opt to whatever the boat needs. It’s never a question, which is a huge thing. A lot of people, a lot of boat owners really don’t take that theory to heart. But Ron really wants it right and wants it safe. He wants it clean, wants it nice, and wants to make sure everybody enjoys.

Ron: So let me tell you a little bit about Wes. He’s so knowledgeable, and when we looked at this boat, it was overwhelming to me at first. Wes went through every nook and cranny. He looked at this, he says, don’t be worried. Let’s go and he’s gone through this whole thing with me, and so we just love it.

Captain Wes gave us this great little, the Moran’s Burger bar. Our burger bar is probably the most well used space that we have. What is so enjoyable, especially in The Bahamas or here in Florida, is it can be hot, humid, and this is totally temperature controlled.

84 Burger Cockpit

Wes: Underway, WELL DONE cruise is comfortably 1650 at about 12 knots with about fully laden on fuel right now, which it is 2200 RPMs. Gets us about 18 knots depending on 19, depending on basic conditions. When it’s light, we cruise about 18 knots and tops out about 22, 23.

Jerry: We have a ton of things to go over today, and we’re going to jump right into it, and we’re going to get started today on the upper deck. As the old saying goes, a bad day on the water, it’s better than a good day at work. Luckily for me, my day entails taking advantage of one of the most beautiful days we’ve had in a really long time. We’re going to start today’s tour off here on the aft deck of the main fly bridge, introducing you to how our tender and davit deploy.

It’s a 14 foot Nautica rib tender. A few of the major improvements that were made on this tender one is all new tubes. We have all new cushions. New sea deck inside, the engine was completely serviced and new electronics were installed. What makes this tender so great is this davit right here. It raises your tender up, it quickly spins around and deploys it right off the back of the boat, which gives you access to the beautiful beaches like we have here behind us today.

84 Burger Aft Deck + Swim Platform

What makes this burger unique is the ability for this arch above me here to fold down. This feature is extremely beneficial when you’re going into low clearance areas or if you’re looking for a place to store your boat in a covered area. When the current owner was making considerations on what yacht to buy, one of the biggest driving factors was the arrangement of this fly bridge. He envisioned his family and friends all hanging out and having a great experience with this wonderful spread out space.

Aft, there are two set teas, port and starboard, as well as this large table, big enough to spread out plenty of food for all your friends and family. What really makes this area special is the added Bimini top that was just recently fabricated out of stainless steel. When you have your family up here and its time to take a break. On the starboard side, we have a Kenyan electric cooktop grill. We also have a freshwater sink for food prep and we have plenty of storage below.

84 Burger Engine Room

This is a fly bridge motor yacht, so obviously we have to talk about the helm, but this is more than just a helm. She’s recently undergone all new electronics package, all new switches, and a complete new dash cover. But one of the great advantages of running the boat from a position like this is your amazing panoramic views and not to mention the fresh air.

This 85 is built out of aluminum, which is very different than a fiberglass built boat. When it came time to repainting her superstructure and haul sides, the entire boat had to be sanded down, completely primed, and was painted with an awlgrip HDT paint.

Wes: Wind was calm, very calm. Calm us for to anchor comfortably offshore for most of the day. We opened the boat wide open, 2250 RPMs approximately. We were doing about 17 knots, mostly because the boat is completely full of fuel when the boat is, and normally we would run the boat about half full, half empty, depending on how you look at it, and typically that would be about 22, 23 knots. So the fuel does make a huge difference as to the boat speed. But having the fuel onboard makes the boat very, very stable and heavy in the water.

84 Burger Salon

Ron: Here we come into one of our favorite rooms next to the dog run. The most important room that sold my wife is our Burger bar. Captain Wes gave us this great little, the Moran’s Burger Bar wine opener. The wine wench, which we use quite often.

Jerry: Ron has taken on the task of replacing all the flooring. This is Amcor Tecan Holly Flooring. They’ve also recovered the entire settee. That’s an umbrella material, and lastly, they finished off with LED lighting. All you can see through the balances and in the ceiling.

Ron: Coming over here, these are acrylic wing doors, so it makes it really easy for handling lines. We can walk forward. We go down the non-skid decks. It’s nice and roomy. It’s got enough headroom for us. We also like if it is absolutely cool or a nice day, we have a Dutch door. Let me show you how this works. That opens up to our aft deck.

84 Burger Master Stateroom

Jerry: The door giving you access to this main cockpit area is not just your average door. It’s separated by a dog latch here, which gives you the ability to close off the bottom section and leave the top half open. This is very nice when you’re trying to keep the climate inside controlled and still entertain guests in both areas. And just overhead, we have an extended brow, which creates a lot of shade for the aft cockpit. This creates a nice opportunity to put two teak chairs that you see here. We have an additional set that goes right here. With everything in its place, cocktails in hand. I can’t think of a better spot that I’d rather spend my evenings.

As I mentioned, the burger’s built out of aluminum and what we have here are stainless staples, which are betted down into the aluminum super structure. This is the only thing separating our aft mezzanine deck from our lower swim platform. So down here on the swim platform, off to my port side, we have a hot and cold shower. Our Glendenning power cable supply goes in here as well as our dockside water hookup while dockside this yachts is powered by a 100-amp shore cord power. It was recently extended out to 110 feet. That way you could dock the boat on either side and have plenty of cord.

84 Burger Galley

The last thing I want to show you here on the stern is our aft interim entrance, which is one of two ways of entering into the engine room. This hatch was completely taken apart, rebuilt all new hinges, and in its own way is artwork in itself.

Wes: Welcome to our WELL DONE engine room. We have two CAT 34 twelves ease and with upgraded after coolers. We love them. They could not be better for us. They were boor scoped and we bought the boat and they’re in perfect condition and they run like tops. They are on V drives with ZF transmissions and right above them is our new air conditioning heating chiller system with all new compressors and the entire system was completely revamped this year.

Outboard of it, new 50-gallon water heater working our way aft. Emergency builds suction manifold, oil change system. The water maker used to live here. We removed it, we put a toolbox in so we’d have a place to store tools. Remotely mounted the water maker over there, above the freshwater pumps that are all also brand new. So all the water system is together and I add stabilizer system. We have two generators on board, 122 kW Onan, and 140 kW kilo pack.

84 Burger Wheelhouse

Jerry: One of the real trademarks. I let you know you’re standing inside of a Burger Modi yacht as this panel right here. My personal opinion on why I think it’s clear is that you could see the true craftsmanship in the labor that was involved in wiring a panel of this size.

Now that I’ve shown you all the exterior spaces on the yacht, I want to focus more in on the interior spaces, and we’re going to start that right here in the salon. Starting off on the soul, you have all new carpeting. All the L-shaped sofa was reupholstered with umbrella material. We have LED lighting in the headliners and in the balances. We’ve also gone ahead and mirrored the Chrysler building here in this photo with the staircase, which was an original design from the original builder. Before we continue forward on the main deck, I’m going to take you down to show you the owner’s state room.

Ron: One of the things that we really liked about this boat when we were looking to buy it is it’s a full beam master state room and it has two walk-in closets that have loads of space. A washer dryer here in the master, which is nice and then of course there’s a washer dryer forward between the three forward rooms. Having a full beam master, it’s just so comfortable. So that’s why we really fell in love with this boat when we were looking at it. So many times it’s one shower or even a bathtub and one toilet. Here we’ve got two toilets and the shower in the center. So come on and let me show you this. Well, something I like watching business news when I’m cleaning up in the mornings, and so when we’re underway, we put a little TV in here, flat screen so that I can watch that.

84 Burger Foredeck

Another item that we really liked in purchasing this boat was we’ve got two accesses to the engine room. So we’ve got this store here as well as you’ve got access from the aft into the engine room, off the swim step.

Jerry: Wrapping up in the owner state room, we’re going to continue forward to the galley and dinette areas. On the starboard side, you’ll find the formal dinette on a raised platform. It’s perfect for enjoying your coffee and breakfast, and conveniently located adjacent from the galley. One of the things I like most about this area is the window view, giving you panoramic sights from here. You also have all the same amenities you would find in your house. A cooktop, stove, oven, dishwasher, trash compactor, refrigerator, freezer, and microwave convection oven. And moving forward, just to the starboard side is our day head.

Half the joy of own a yacht like this is running it. So now we’re going to transition to the lower helm and show you some of the updated electronics.

84 Burger VIP Stateroom

Wes: Well, I love burgers. I’ve driven burgers before, and they’re great boats. It’s like driving a sidewalk as safe as it could be. A heavy, heavy boat. This boat carries a little over 5,000 gallons of fuel, and right now it is full, and so the boat, as you can see, very stable, very heavy in the water. This sky’s kind of fast right in front of us, a little bit more power, just so the stabilizers will give a little bit more effect. But look around this guy here. In a moment, this is firing up and this will show the video system, which monitors not only the engine room, but the aft deck of the boat. So when you’re backing into a slip, it shows you exactly how far you are away. Any screen will do whatever you want at the three. We’re running time zero on a separate computer screen on the left here, the port, and port to that is the master for the video system.

Jerry: The uniqueness of the boat is probably the fact that it’s aluminum constructed and everything has to be pre-thought and pre-drawn out. Don O’Keefe was the designer of this particular burger when it was built. So therefore it takes a lot of forethought and a lot of execution when you go to build something to this size. What I’m going to pull out here is something that I would probably refer to as the Bible. Every burger comes with one. But extremely detailed. Everything you need to know about the yacht is specified in here as far as specs, electric, plumbing, air conditioning, everything you need to know is in this manual.

Ron: Well, of course, Jerry, this has been a lifelong dream being in Florida, being able to be on our boat, and we so enjoy fixing up older boats and making them ours, and this is our latest venture that we’ve done complete paint job, and to be here at Anchor off of the beach at Fort Lauderdale, it just to me, doesn’t get any better than this. Of course, we got to keep the wife happy, and we have two dogs and the rescue Shiatsu’s one’s Bigelow and at the pound, and we named him Admiral Bigelow, and then we have Amber, another rescue, and so we named her, of course, a boating dog, Ensen Amber. So what do we do with our dogs when we’re out cruising? Well, come here, let me show you this.

84 Burger Guest Stateroom

Here we go. I’m going to open this up for you, and as you can see, this is our dog run. It is outfitted with grass, a fire hydrant, a rock, and then we have a hose because there’s scuppers underneath there when they do their business. We just hose it down. Last year we were three weeks in the Exumas and we were able to not have to go into shore if we didn’t want to, and the dogs are quite content.

This forward area in the bow area is always very enjoyable when we’re underway especially on the Intercostal or in between The Bahamas when the water’s nice. Then as you can see, we’ve got our staff with our New York Yacht Club, Virgie on it. We enjoy very much being a part of that club. This was a gift to me given by Jerry Gilpin after we bought the boat a couple of years ago. What a surprise to have this beautiful bell engraved with burger and the name of our boat, WELL DONE.

Jerry: There’s only one area on this boat we haven’t been to yet, and that is the forward guest crew cabin area. Just ahead of me, here is the forward guest, VIP state room. We’ll start there. What I like most about the forward guest VIP cabin is the centerline queen berth. There’s extra abundant storage below. You have two closets on either side. You also have a head and a shower en suite, and working our way aft, just over my left shoulder is our forward washer dryer area, and just to my right, which is the port side, we’re going to look at our second of the guest cabins.

84 Burger crew quarters guest accommodation

This cabin can be utilized in one of two ways. It could be either used as a guest cabin or for crew. It features an over under single birth configuration with storage below, another en-suite head and shower, and all new AV equipment as well.

Our third and final stay room is here on the starboard side. Again, another centerline queen birth. You have another en suite, full head and shower, all with updated antico flooring. LED lighting and a large hanging closet as well.

Ron: Okay, Jerry, so let’s look at the whaler just right that you were so key in helping me put that together when with Wes and myself, we had a full plate here, but she’s now just so much fun to take out for a little harbor cruise and of course it’s so easy to handle.

Jerry: This boat just so happens to be a 2010 Boston Whaler Dauntless, and I got lucky enough to get the call one day to assist him with making her match this beautiful burger that’s sitting here over my left shoulder. One is, it’s a Dauntless, so you have extra seating in the back that lifts up from that aft hatch. We have forward seating in the front and also a bench seat for two at the helm. The boat was Repowered with a mercury 150. All new electronics, full paint job, new rub rail, and a brand new Bimini top to top it off.

84 Burger Tender Boston Whaler tender

Ron: I never thought I’d have a boat like that. I mean, when we put a Jacuzzi up on the fly bridge and a couple glasses of wine up there, when you’re in it, it’s heaven. So every boat has a little bit more and a little bit more and so that’s where I’ve so enjoyed working on this boat and getting it to the place it’s at with Wes, who’s unbelievable. Been with us 20 years and look forward to continuing and may be fixing up another boat.

Jerry: Ron, Wes, thank you so much for today for such a wonderful day out on the water. I enjoyed every moment of it, and I’d also like to thank you, the viewer for joining me on board today, WELL DONE. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to me at any time.

Ron: With building my first boat, which eight feet, but it was still steaming the frames, the sides, putting it all together, buying my first little one and a half horsepower outboard motor and hanging it off the back. I just fell in love with cruising around Balbo Island in Newport Beach. So my next thought was, well, as I’m getting a little older, start buying other boats.

So I had that eight footer, then I got a 12 footer, and that had an 18 horsepower outboard on it that I could get up and ski behind. Believe it or not, you’d have to drop a skit and then I got a 16 foot Donzi that’s something I really felt like I stepped up, and so then I got into my first 25-foot cabin cruiser, and then I had a 30-foot cabin cruiser, then I had a 35 foot which was really my first really great boat, a Magnum 35 sport fisher, and then I had my friends all called it the Tilton Hilton. I had a 40-foot aft cabin pacemaker and boo it was that thing top heavy. I didn’t know about stabilizers then, and so as I got older and got into different boats, the neat thing was I started out with, when I was going to Catalina, we used a radio direction finder. So it was just a radio and you pointed it towards the radio station on the top of Catalina, and then of course we went to Loran C and then, oh my gosh, GPS. So as you got other boats, they had other items, and like the 40 pacemaker, that was my first boat that I put a water maker in. So then we could go over to Catalina and spend a week and never run out water. Store checks because we were in the meat business and I would go out and do grocery store checks.

And so my wife said, well, you are usually out on your boat, but so I know where you’re at when you say you’re doing store checks, you’re on your boat. Well, we had a boat named dialed in because we dialed it in. We were very excited about a 48-foot boat we had, and then we had a 53 Hatteras and then we upgraded to a 76 Lazzara and we kept the name store checks, and then when we bought this being in the hamburger business and this being a burger boat and you need to cook your burger’s, WELL DONE. My wife said, the boat’s got to be named, WELL DONE. So that’s how this started and we are going through working on it and to fix it up and make it look WELL DONE.
