Learning to Dive in Fiji [FRANK Magazine Preview]

Bill Springer | March 19, 2023

The good vibes from our “Learning to Dive in Fiji” feature that will appear in the upcoming issue of FRANK are just too good to keep to ourselves. So here’s a little photo preview of what it’s like to get PADI-certified to dive in paradise.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit many of the world’s best dive locations. But, I’d never actually got certified to dive. I always said: “Snorkeling is just as good,” even though I know I was lying to myself.

The coral and marine life are next-level in Fiji.

Now don’t get me wrong. Snorkeling is amazing in world-class snorkel spots located in the Bahamas, South Pacific, and the Caribbean. But now that I’ve spent hours communing with the underwater world with other like-minded divers in Fiji, it’s going to be hard to return to the limitations of snorkeling.

The underwater world in Fiji is amazing.

I don’t want to give too much away from our upcoming FRANK feature, but I can say that doing my open-water certification dives in the warm water that’s teeming with fish and vibrant, colorful coral surrounding the Kokomo Private Island in southern Fiji was just a bit better than doing my final dives in the ice-cold, headache-inducing water in Massachusetts (my hometown)!

Diving with these people in Fiji was a dream.

And getting certified was only the beginning. My introduction to the magic of Fiji was even more special since we spent our time on land at two of Fiji’s premier get-away spots.

Kokomo Private Island in Fiji is the ultimate learn-to-dive destination.

The Kokomo Private Island is as luxe, private, and amazing as you’d imagine a modern private-island resort in Fiji would be. And since our days were filled with diving all morning, healthy lunches served in two separate restaurants, and afternoons spent on the beach, in the pool, or in a hammock, this trip was one for the books.

The Kokomo dive team is comprised of world-class teachers and people!

And that was only the start. We spent our last few days in Fiji at the Nanuku Resort on the mainland, only a short seaplane flight north of Kokomo, where we got a taste of Fiji’s tropical jungle environment and local culture.

Visiting a village close to Nanuku was as fun and meaningful as the other parts of the trip.
