Kurt's heritage of the sea dates back to before he was born. His father qualified for command of and sailed as chief engineer aboard a DDR Class Destroyer in the United States Navy. His uncle served as a career merchant marine officer who moved on to navigating large aircrafts before the days of GPS. He flew aboard the Pan Am Clipper Ships that circled the globe, and later, for the Norwegian government helping in their effort to locate the true (magnetic) North Pole.
Kurt first became a sailing instructor with a YMCA camp on Torch Lake, Michigan, and raced "E" boats against the local yacht club. He later sailed more extensively on the Great Lakes and into the North Channel, the Aegean and Adriatic Seas.
He was even invited to crew aboard the "Liverpool Enterprise" for the first Whitbread race that visited Fort Lauderdale, but he had to withdraw before making what would have been his first Atlantic sail crossing. He most recently raced aboard Atmosphere, a 54-meter sailing yacht, in the Perini Cup in Sardinia.
Kurt received a bachelor of science degree from Cornell University and law degree from the University of Miami. While in law school, he quickly discovered his love of the sea, and focused on admiralty and ocean law courses.
After practicing in New Orleans in the offshore oil business, Kurt came back to South Florida to pursue a practice representing yacht owners. After 25 years in this field, he has acquired extensive knowledge in all aspects of yacht sales, construction, and ownership.
Among his peers in the legal community, he had been awarded the highest rating for both legal ability and ethics ("AV") and voted into the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers every year since 2001.
Kurt then decided to retire from the practice of law to focus full-time on yacht brokerage. In addition to acquiring a Merchant Marine Officer license and an aviation pilot's license with multi-engine and instrument ratings, Kurt is now a bonded and licensed yacht and ship broker.
Kurt began his yacht brokerage career with Northrop & Johnson for two years, then Merle Wood & Associates for eight. He is now pleased to have joined the Super Yacht team at Denison Yachting.
