Monaco is a tiny independent city-state on France’s Mediterranean coastline known for its upscale casinos, restaurants, yacht-lined harbor and prestigious Grand Prix motor race, which runs through Monaco’s streets once a year.

Race History

In 1929, on April 14th, under the honorary Presidency of S.A.S. the Prince Louis II that the Grand Prix of Monaco was born thanks in particular to President Anthony Noghes who showed a strong will in order to be able to organize in the smallest European state an event of this scale. His idea strongly supported by the Prince Louis II could be concretized thanks to its motivation and support of the famous pilot Monegasque, Louis Chiron.

At this date, 16 competitors leave for a race of 100 laps. This year there, the average speed was of 80,194 km/h. After various modification on the initial track the course measures currently 3,367 km. Due to its length the Grand Prix is limited to 78 turns.

The Race Cars

A Formula One car is a single seat, open cockpit, open-wheel racing car with substantial front and rear wings, and an engine positioned behind the driver.

The regulations governing the cars are unique to the championship. Monaco Grand Prix has race cars designed and manufactured by some of the worlds top notch companies such as Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren.

The Drivers

The Formula One drivers come from all over the world to partake in this prestigious race. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of several races in the Formula One series of races and is the most well-known.

The track will test the driver's and crew's skills from top to bottom. It is said that drivers make over 3,500 gear changes over the course of the 78 lap race.

The 2016 winner was Lewis Hamilton of the United Kingdom driving for Team Mercedes.

In 2012 each of the 11 teams spent on average between $5.4 million and $13.5 million to compete in the Monaco Grand Prix.

With an estimated cost of roughly $2.8 million – $7 million per car, the total value of the cars present for one team on any given race weekend can be as high as $28 million.

On race weekend nearly 100,000 people will descend on Monaco, though total estimates including spectators, party goers and families puts the final tally closer to 200,000.
