36 Cabo Review

Source: Jeanne Craig, MotorBoating Magazine

Cabo‘s mission has always been to make the world’s finest fishing boats, which is a lofty goal when you consider how much competition there is from domestic and international builders. Yet the company has been tenaciously working at it over the years, and in the process developed a line of boats with a reputation for over-engineered quality, attention to detail and a reliable, if not downright sporty, offshore ride. This year, Cabo takes its ambitions up another notch by assigning itself the task of creating more luxurious interiors for two proven models, one of which is the 36 Express.

We tested the 36 off Fort Lauderdale, where the boat looked the part of a tournament-ready blue water platform with its bait prep center, live well, oversize insulated fish boxes, transom door with top gate and Pipe Welders tower. The efficient cockpit layout and rugged build will satisfy those with a “fishing-comes-first” mentality, but the newly redesigned cabin will draw compliments from owners who appreciate a softer, more comfortable place to relax after a long and satisfying day spent dragging lines. This cabin is warmed by a good deal of beautifully finished teak used for cabinet doors, frames, storage lockers and bulkheads. In addition, new wall coverings and padded panels replace the bare gelcoat that was on the previous 36.

While the new interior also offered on Cabo’s 40 Flybridge is more inviting, the fit and finish is designed to be low-maintenance, a characteristic that is key for this builder’s active clientele. As for accommodations, the cabin sleeps five: three in bunks forward and two in a convertible settee. A full galley and private head with separate shower stall round out the cruising features. With a cabin as pleasant as this one, even an avid angler may want to find time between bites to join his family inside.
