Design and Construction

The Hallberg-Rassy 40 features a hand-laid GRP hull with Divinycell PVC-foam insulation, offering excellent thermal insulation and noise reduction. The hull incorporates a lead keel reinforced with stainless steel bolts for optimal stability and performance. The deck, coachroof, and cockpit areas are constructed using sandwich laminate with solid teak laid in silicon rubber, ensuring both durability and aesthetic appeal. Stainless steel strips protect the rubbing strake, mooring, and spring cleats, enhancing durability and style.

Cockpit and Deck Layout

The spacious cockpit is designed for comfort and functionality, featuring high-gloss varnished folding teak tables, both in the cockpit and at the navigation station. The helm station includes a leather-covered steering wheel, comprehensive navigation instruments, and an extension to the sprayhood for enhanced weather protection. Four padeye fittings in the cockpit provide secure attachment points for harnesses, enhancing safety during rough conditions. Entry gates on both port and starboard sides offer easy access to the deck. A bow ladder and additional bow roller facilitate anchoring and boarding.

Deck fittings include Lewmar self-tailing winches, with electric winches (Lewmar 40 CEST) for the outhaul and mainsheet and electric genoa winches (Lewmar 50 CEST) for easier sail handling. An integrated bathing platform and a fresh water shower on the transom enhance comfort at sea. The boat is equipped with a powerful 6 HP bow thruster for precise maneuvering in tight spaces, while the Flexofold propeller ensures efficient propulsion, with a fixed propeller kept as a spare.

Interior Accommodations

The interior of this Hallberg-Rassy 40 is finished in light mahogany with a matt silk finish, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The saloon features Alcantara upholstery in Bohemian Blue with Ivory piping, a foldable dining table with a built-in bar, and Leecloths for added safety while sleeping underway. Tan marine-grade carpet was installed new, enhancing the luxurious feel of the interior. The original layout includes a large linear galley and a head at the entrance, offering practical space for living and working.

The aft cabin provides a separate double berth and a single berth with a seat between them, and the forward cabin has two 6’ 9” berths. All sleeping areas are fitted with Leecloths, including the saloon, to ensure comfort during passages. The galley is well-equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, a two-burner gas cooker with oven, and a deck wash pump (Flojet 13 L/min) for convenient maintenance. A hot water tank was replaced in 2015, ensuring reliable hot water availability.

Rigging and Sails

  • Sail Inventory: Mainsail by Elvström (Trioptimal, laminated DC cloth), furling genoa by Elvström (Trioptimal, laminated with UV protection), gennaker with snuffer and launch bag, working jib, and a hank-on storm sail for high-wind conditions.
  • Additional Rigging: Jib furling system (Selden Furlex), spinnaker halyard with spare, spinnaker pole against mast with topping lift, backstay tensioner (Selden), and a removable bowsprit for optimal sail deployment.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems

  • Engine: Yanmar 54 HP diesel engine with a Centaflex flexible coupling for smooth operation.
  • Water Maker: ECH2O Tec water maker (12V) with boost pump and freshwater flush/maintenance.
  • Fuel Filtration: Dual Racor 75500 FGX three-stage fuel filters ensure clean fuel supply.
  • Battery and Charging: A 660 amp-hour main battery bank powers onboard systems, with a newly installed Victron isolation transformer (110/220V) and charger (2024) providing versatile charging options. A 220 AMP alternator on a 5 HP Yanmar auxiliary diesel engine further enhances charging capacity.
  • Renewable Energy: DuoGen-2 water/wind generator providing 8 amps at 6 knots, combined with a Hydrovane self-steering system for efficient, sustainable cruising.
  • Bilge Pumps: Two electric bilge pumps and one manual bilge pump ensure efficient water management.
  • Water Maker: Installed in Florida in 2010 (Snead Island Boatyard); decommissioned in 2014 but easily re-commissioned with new filters. Produces 7–8 gallons/hour.
  • Air Conditioning: Installed in 2011, powered by a 5 HP auxiliary Kubota diesel engine. Vents cool the main cabin, aft cabin, and forward V-berth.
  • Batteries: Three banks of 6V golf cart batteries (installed 2017), providing 640 amp-hours of power.
  • Auxiliary Engine: 5 HP Kubota diesel with a 200A Balmar alternator, capable of powering the onboard systems and charging batteries efficiently.
  • Electrical: Wired for 110V in the U.S. with a Victron isolation transformer allowing compatibility with 220V systems in Europe. Easily powers laptops and small appliances, though no microwave is installed.

Navigation and Electronics

  • Rope Cutter: "Stripper" rope cutter installed for propeller protection.

2009: Sailed to Denmark, Germany, and England. Shipped to Florida via ocean transport, and outfitted with a water maker, duo generator, windvane, and full boat cover.

2010: Sailed to Annapolis, shipped to Washington by truck. Cruised in San Juan’s, BC, and the Sound from 2010-2014. Returned to Portland in 2014.

2014-2015: Sailed to La Paz, Mexico, joined Baja HaHa rally in San Diego, spent the summer in Mexico, and transported back to BC via sea transport.

2015-present: Continued summer cruising in the San Juan Islands.
