Entering from the aft cockpit California deck you are immediately greeted with the capacious salon dressed in teak and utilizing a 21’5” beam. Featuring the timeless appeal of teak sole with holly accents, vast windows, teak cabinetry, luxurious ultra-leather headliner, and most importantly, an interior layout that balances form with function. Dining and entertaining guests becomes an effortless experience with an open floor plan encompassing the salon and galley. This layout allows for an open social environment while keeping the function of the galley separated from the rest of the salon.
Starting at the port side of the salon is a corner granite topped bar featuring a brass sink and glassware storage through three overhead cabinets. Below the counter of the bar you will find an icemaker and two large refrigerated drawers with separate temperature controls. Moving forward along the port side of the salon is large L-shaped settee which wraps around to the edge of the galley counter top. Complimenting this settee is a custom teak hi-lo table that can adjust in height & width to function as both a coffee or a dining table.
The starboard side features two salon armchairs and a storage credenza with a wine cooler positioned at the forward end. An entertainment cabinet is found to the aft corner of the credenza to starboard with a 48” HD TV and sound bar installed on a retractable lift. Just forward of the aforementioned wine cooler is a workstation featuring a wrap-around desk which is equipped with a computer and monitor on a retractable lift. This salon desk includes a chair and additional storage via drawers and cabinets.
The galley is tucked to the port side just forward of the salon, which is separated by a large wrap-around granite counter top and overhead galley cabinets. The inboard side of the galley features a counter top overhang to accommodate two custom mounted swinging bar stools. Within the galley you will find a dishwasher, trash compactor, a stainless steel sink with mixer faucet & insta-hot dispenser, a convection microwave overhead, an induction cooktop with custom stainless steel pot holders, a stainless steel oven below the cooktop, and a full-sized teak faced refrigerator with matching freezer drawers beneath. Teak cabinetry fills in the rest of the galley and across to the opposing starboard side are two large slide-out pantries and additional storage compartments and cabinets.
Following the steps found to the starboard-side of the pilothouse will lead you to the central accommodations lobby—here you will find three en-suite staterooms with three heads total. The full-beam en-suite mid-ship master stateroom resides to aft, an en-suite guest stateroom to port, and a VIP stateroom at the forward peak. The full-sized Bosch washer & separate dryer can be found to the port side of the accommodations lobby. The floor of the lobby includes a large hatch to the Machinery Room below—in addition to housing equipment for the vessel, this below deck room also provides great storage. All staterooms feature teak and holly sole with full carpeting throughout (2019).
The mid-ship master stateroom takes full advantage of the full 21’5” beam and features a king sized island berth with a tempurpedic mattress. This arrangement allows for access from either side and the berth is equipped with a hydraulic lift that can be raised at either the foot or head of the berth to access a large storage cavity underneath, perfect for storing extra bed linens or keeping valuables out of sight in the built-in safe. Nightstands equipped with drawers are situated to each side of the king berth and include wall-mounted mirrors above. A dresser/bureau is found at the starboard wall and features large drawers, cabinetry, and shelving, as well as a large port hole above. To the starboard forward corner of the cabin is a capacious walk-in closet featuring louvered French doors. Moving inboard from the closet is a separate hanging locker with storage drawers beneath. Additional storage is provided through ample under-floor storage in the cabin. Facing the berth is a wall mounted Samsung 40” HD TV with a Blu-Ray/DVD player & Apple TV situated on the port side of the forward bulkhead. This master stateroom also features a remote alarm system to monitor anchor position at night. Finally to the port side of the stateroom is a full length mirror and access to the en-suite master head.
The master and both guest heads are exceptionally spacious with generous glass and stainless steel shower enclosures. Granite countertops compliment the matching granite floor in the one piece molded fiberglass shower stalls. Most of the heads onboard feature warm polished brass sink and shower fixtures with the except of the forward VIP head which is in stainless steel. Additional shaving/make-up mirrors with folding arms are situated in the master and forward VIP heads, with two and one mirror respectively. Storage can be found through mirrored medicine cabinets, as well as teak cabinetry above and below the counter tops of the each head.
The VIP stateroom to forward is composed of a queen sized island berth with a tempurpedic mattress and is surrounded by shelves, cabinets, drawers, and a hanging locker to the port side. Similar to the island berth in the master stateroom, this arrangement allows for ease of access from either side and the entire berth can be raised with a hydraulic lift to access a storage cavity underneath. Over head is a skylight / escape hatch which, in addition to portholes to either side, provides natural light to the cabin and features an electric blind/screen. To the starboard side aft wall is a mounted 40” Samsung HD TV facing the berth. The en-suite head for the forward cabin can be found to starboard.
A third stateroom is located to port and, like the rest of the cabins, is accessed from the accommodations lobby. This guest stateroom comes equipped with four twin-sized bunks. The overhead bunks, pull-man style to inboard and a slide-out overhead to outboard, are capable of folding or sliding out of the away to provide more space when not needed. A nightstand with shelving separates the two sets of bunks and a hanging locker with dresser drawers is found at the foot of the outboard berths. Further storage is accomplished via drawers beneath the bottom bunks and the en-suite head access is located to the forward wall of the stateroom.
The Fleming 78, as with all Flemings, features a dedicated pilothouse which takes the role as the primary location to control the boat without any distractions from other onboard activities. However, it remains only a few short steps up from the salon & galley and it is only another five interior steps up to the flybridge.
Visibility forward and wrapping around to port and starboard is excellent. Below the expansive windshield are specially designed removable consoles which provide ample room for a full range of modern electronics and equipment. Overhead consoles provide additional space for instruments and speakers. Engine displays, electrical breakers, fuel management, and other on board systems are handled through the integrated Boning ship monitoring system.
To the aft of the port side resides a raised corner settee with a compass rose inlayed teak table provides a comfortable social or dining area with phenomenal visibility while underway. A day head can be found at the center of the aft pilothouse wall, separating the salon access to port and the flybridge access found to the starboard side. Steps down to the accommodations to are found to the forward starboard corner of the pilothouse, just adjacent to the console. To each side of the pilothouse is a sliding door that provides access to the walk-around side decks of the Portuguese bridge. A large stainless steel and teak-accented destroyer wheel and two Stidd helm chairs finish off the pilothouse of this ultimate cruising yacht.
The fully enclosed and air-conditioned flybridge is easily accessed from the pilothouse door to starboard or by the step ladder in the cockpit. It features two Stidd chairs at the upper helm station which provides excellent visibility, particularly in close quarters and bustling harbors with its 360 degree view. The teak veneered electronics console is large enough to house an array of state of the art equipment, featuring a five monitor arrangement. A cushioned sun lounge is to the starboard of the flybridge console, which provides an excellent spot for kids or grand kids while underway. To the port side of the helm is a small settee with a mounted teak table. This upper helm area of the flybridge also provides some excellent storage opportunities through various cabinets.
Stepping down one level from the helm is a social area featuring another settee with a mounted teak table to port along with a flybridge bar to starboard. This granite topped bar includes a large counter top, a stainless steel sink, and two Isotherm stainless steel refrigerator drawers. Overhead, two offset hardtops give coverage to the flybridge deck and are held up by the radar arch and stainless steel supports. The forward hardtop and arch in turn supports the custom hinge-able mast, domes, open arrays, and other instrumentation. Meanwhile a full flybridge enclosure with Seacrylic panels provides the bridge with further protection from the elements.
Both the flybridge and boat deck feature natural teak decking with white caulk and match the rest of the exterior decking found onboard. Moving aft to the boat deck brings a Texas Pit Crafters grill and cockpit hatch to port. Centered on the boat deck is the tender and davit. This arrangement allows for launching of the tender from either side as well as to stern. A stainless steel handrail wraps along the edges of the boat deck and future kayaks or paddleboards can still find a potential home with the enormous amount of free deck space still available.
Flybridge Helm:
In common with all Flemings, the hull is hand laid and solid fiberglass reinforced with a grid of stringers and frames. The integrated swim platform extends the waterline which adds to the overall length of the semi-displacement hull for a smoother ride. Vinylester resin, which is used on the cabin sides, is also utilized below the waterline on the hull with further protection provided by epoxy barrier coats. A reasonable five foot draft allows for Bahamas cruising while ensuring that the running gear is protected by a full-length keel which is foam filled and glassed across the top to isolate it from the hull. This keel gives nearly a foot length of protection until reaching the running gear. Onboard, all exterior decks are comprised of natural teak with white caulking and natural teak cap rails and combing boards accent the bulwarks throughout.
On deck she has familiar walk-around decks used on all Fleming models; in combination with high bulwarks, a Portuguese bridge, and full length handrails along the inboard house, security for both children and pets is ensured. The capacious cockpit includes a California deck sporting a large L-shaped settee with a mounted teak table (electrically controlled height). Enclosing the California deck, along with the step-ladder to flybridge and the salon doors, is a full black texalene screen. At the center of the cockpit deck is wide lockable deck hatch equipped with a hydraulic lift that allows extensive access to the lazarette below. Each aft corner of the cockpit has a raised platform with warping winches and the transom features a large gate that swings in to allow ingress to the integrated swim platform. Engine room access is found to the port side, up by the port aft pilaster, via lockable door. An additional access to the engine room level is provided through a hidden passage found at the center-aft of the California deck. This section is capable of lifting up via gas assisted struts to enter the spacious dive area & storage room which features a dive compressor and a oversized sink, in addition to bountiful storage capabilities. To the port & starboard sides of this cockpit passage at the California deck are two aft control stations featuring engine controls and Twin Disc EJS controls (Express Joystick System) at either side, with Twin Disc EPS (Express Positioning System) control at the starboard station.
Moving forward along the side decks you will discover entry gates on each side. These gates provide lower entry close to the water line, meanwhile additional gates on either side of the raised Portuguese bridge give the option for a higher point of entry. The Portuguese bridge provides great dock line storage through hatches along the interior. Up to the bow will bring you to the teak foredeck which incorporates a raised fiberglass non-skid section to the center. Special attention has been paid to the ease and safety in which the heavy duty ground tackle is set and retrieved. The anchor platform accepts two anchors with two winches, each of which can be controlled by a handheld unit at the platform, by windlass controls at both the pilothouse and flybridge helm stations, or by the Yacht Controller remote.
Superior systems and engineering are key elements for Fleming Yachts, whose philosophy has always been to choose only the best equipment available and have it be readily accessible for maintenance. The 78 provides more headroom below the deck, allowing for a true standup engine room which gives plenty of room to service the twin 1800 horsepower MAN V-12 diesel engines. The main engine room access is from an outside lockable door along the port side deck with additional access provided through a cockpit lift-up hatch aft of the California deck. This hatch initially leads to the boat’s dive area & storage room which features a dive compressor and oversized sink, in addition to bountiful storage capabilities. To achieve the extremely low sound and vibration that Flemings are known for, Aqua-Drive systems transfer the thrust directly to the hull and the engine is isolated by using soft engine mounts. Aft of the engine room, the custom workshop/storage area provides more than ample room to storing cruising gear, including deck chairs, fenders, and dock lines. The lazarette found beneath the cockpit hydraulic hatch houses the water tanks and steering gear while also leaving room for additional storage opportunities. Further mechanical equipment is housed with the air-conditioned machinery room located forward of the engine room. This machinery room also provides great storage and is conveniently accessed by a large hatch found at the floor of the accommodation lobby. Much like with the engine room, all components and equipment within this below deck room are very easily reached and serviceable.
